The History of Rozenburg Guest House

1795

Original ‘garden’ Estate

The property on which the current Rozenburg Guest House now stands, was originally part of a large strip of garden (“tuin”) land that originally extended from the south side of Dorp Street, down to the north bank of the Eerste River. Named Rozenburg, the land was first granted to M. Borcher(d)s on 27 April 1795.

1946

Subdivided Erven

A survey diagram of Rozenburg dated 1946 shows the garden area was still undeveloped at that time. But by the late 1940s, Rozenburg estate had been subdivided into numerous erven.

1947

Floris Johannes Grove

On 8 July 1947, Floris Johannes Grove bought Erf 765 and Erf 778 (both portions of the subdivided Rozenburg estate from J.P. Hamman who had bought the land in 1946.

1948

Gert Matthys Snyman

The following year, on 27 June 1948, both erven (765 and 778, still undeveloped) were sold by Grove to Cape-born Gert Matthys Snyman. It is likely that Snyman had the house built, to become known as Rozenburg Guest House, sometime after he bought the two erven in 1948. It was built on the former Erf 765, probably during the 1950's.

1950

Hamman Street Fully Developed

The house built on the site is double-storeyed, with a pitched roof and covered portico on the south side facing the Eerste River. The windows are of steel and the base of the building is clad in facebrick below window level, both features which fit the c.1950s date quite well.
